As part of the James Joyce Immersive, a Stream of Consciousness Writing Workshop was held at Triveni Kala Sangam, bringing participants together to explore the literary techniques and creative practices associated with James Joyce, one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century.
The two-hour workshop provided participants with an opportunity to engage practically with Joyce’s distinctive approach to writing, with a particular focus on stream of consciousness, sensory observation, epiphany, subtext, and character development.
The session encouraged participants to approach writing as an exploratory and spontaneous process. Participants were introduced to stream-of-consciousness techniques and encouraged to write continuously without editing or self-censorship, allowing one thought to lead naturally to another. Through a series of guided exercises, they explored sensory observation by paying close attention to sounds, surroundings, and everyday experiences. They also examined the concept of epiphany and how ordinary moments can lead to significant personal or narrative insights, while investigating subtext and the difference between what characters say and what they may actually think or desire.
The workshop also invited participants to reflect on questions inspired by Joyce’s literary concerns: What are we waiting for? What are we avoiding? What do we want but cannot say aloud? How do cities, families, memories, and expectations shape our identities? These prompts encouraged participants to connect literary techniques with their own experiences and perspectives, creating a space where personal observation and imaginative writing could intersect.
A key focus of the session was the relationship between Joyce’s Dublin and contemporary Delhi. By examining familiar experiences through a Joycean lens, participants explored how the details of everyday urban life can become material for meaningful and unexpected stories.
Participants engaged actively with the writing exercises, approached the activities with openness and curiosity, and generously shared their work and reflections. The workshop emphasised experimentation rather than perfection, encouraging participants to write bravely, follow unexpected trains of thought, and discover connections that might not emerge through conventional approaches to writing.
The Stream of Consciousness Writing Workshop offered participants an immersive introduction to key aspects of James Joyce’s literary practice while providing practical tools for creative writing, observation, and character development. The session demonstrated how ordinary experiences, when examined closely, can reveal complex emotions, memories, desires, and narratives.
The organisers extend their sincere thanks to everyone who participated, contributed their writing, and shared their perspectives throughout the workshop. Their engagement helped create meaningful connections between Joyce’s Dublin and the lived experiences of contemporary Delhi.
