About the event

JAMES JOYCE IMMERSIVE

Eveline & Counterparts

Two stories from James Joyce's Dubliners, performed back to back in the Shridharani Gallery as part of Bloomsday Week at Triveni Kala Sangam.

Step into the world of Irish writer James Joyce with an evening of intimate and immersive dramatised readings from Dubliners, brought to life by Kaivalya Plays in collaboration with the Embassy of Ireland. This double bill brings together two of the most powerful stories in the collection, performed in a gallery space transformed by immersive projections and spatial sound design.

Eveline

Performed by Aishwarya Jha | Language: English

Joyce's masterful portrait of a young woman caught between the safety of home and the promise of escape. As Eveline sits by her window contemplating leaving everything she knows behind, her internal paralysis becomes a mirror for anyone who has ever stood at the threshold of change. The performer is surrounded by three walls of projection and a spatial sound system that places the audience inside her psychological world.

Counterparts

Performed by Varoon P. Anand | Language: English

One of Joyce's most charged and troubling stories. It traces a day in the life of a clerk worn down by work, pride, and drink, and the destructive spiral that follows. Adapted to contemporary Delhi, the performer navigates a three-screen environment with spatial audio, blurring the boundary between stage and city.

This performance includes mature themes including workplace abuse, substance abuse, domestic violence and psychological deterioration. Viewer discretion is advised.

About the Experience

The Shridharani Gallery is transformed for the evening into an immersive performance space. A projector mounted on the ceiling beams casts images onto the gallery's back wall. Four studio monitors positioned around the space create a surround sound environment. The audience sits within the installation, surrounded by the story. This is not traditional theatre. There is no stage. There is no barrier between performer and audience. You are inside the story.

Presented alongside JOYCEWALE: Retrospective Photo Essay by Mayank Austen Soofi, on display at the Shridharani Gallery throughout the week.
